Walk to the end of Homer Spit for dozens of local businesses and restaurants that cater to visitors. Go fishing, tour the many museums and art galleries; take a ferry ride to Halibut Cove for dinner and a visit to a community with no roads. Take a ferry ride to Kodiak Island to visit Fort Abercrombie State Historical Park, the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center; eat lunch at the Kodiak Island Brewing Company; and visit the Kodiak Laboratory Aquarium and Touch Tank. Fly to Katmai National Park out of Homer to watch grizzlies at Brooks Falls, $400/person.

Fishing Hole Campground (907) 235-6090, on the Homer Spit, $24/night dry, is a level gravel lot with killer views. Cityofhomer-ak.gov. Potable water, flush toilets, dumpster, fish cleaning station, large rigs OK, dump $5. Close to boat launch, harbor, and shops.

Free Wi-Fi at Washboard Laundromat on Ocean Dr (also has pay showers). Dump and potable water across from the Post Office on way to Homer Spit, N59.64236 W151.5287, entrance on South end, $5. Two Sisters Bakery is worth a visit.
