2022 Cortez Colorado to FOY

This circuit picks up from the end of the Best of Arizona, Utah and Colorado and will go down to Farmington New Mexico, Canyon de Chelly, over to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and Death Valley. It winds up at the Fountain of Youth in time for the Annual Win Dance Rally/Winter Activities at the end of October. There will be some amazing scenery, hiking, four wheeling, kayaking and new places to explore.

CORTEZ, CO

August 29, 2022 to September 6, 2022
Activity Ideas

Visit the Mesa Verde National Park, and take a Ranger guided tour of Cliff Palace, Balcony House, and Long House ($5 per person tickets sell out quickly but can be purchased up to two days in advance at the Mesa Verde Visitor Center, open 7:30 am to 7 pm). Visit the Cortez Cultural Center for a glimpse into the current Native American culture and the Hawkins Preserve to see the areas native flora. Celebrate Labor Day with maybe a burn your own.

Parking Location

Elks Lodge #1789, 2100 N Dolores Rd, Cortez, CO. Elevation: 6,200 ft. No water or sewer, all first come first serve. Circuit Leader to verify space available for the group size about 3 or 4 weeks in advance.

Directions and Other Information

$18/night for Electric, (2 spots, 30 amp) 3 graveled spots and open field parking @$10 for dry camping. Check in at the bar or there is a drop box outside on the days the restaurant is not open.

FARMINGTON, NM

Activity Ideas

Hike the Bisti Badlands, see the hoodoos, twisted geology and a rainbow of colors. Taste the Wines of the San Juans, visit the Shiprock Pinnacle off highway 491. Cool off at Lake Farmington with a swim, kayak, tube or fish. Mountain biking at the Allen Run for every type of riding. Visit some of the many museums and galleries downtown that often have some of the artists working there. Visit Chaco National Historical Park with all of their prehistoric ruins (drive, bike or hike the 9 mile loop). Some world class 4 wheeling is available at Chokecherry Canyon including rock crawling. The Four Corners is is 30 miles SE. There are numerous ruins to explore in the area.

Cottonwood – Navajo Lake State Park, NM 511, Navaho Dam, NM 87412. No Charcoal or wood burning. An annual State park pass can be purchased on line through Reserve America, for $225 for out of state residents that is good for 12 months from the date of purchase.

Need Reservations – 1-877-664-7787 $14 a night with electric and water plus a $12 reservation fee. 47 sites, 50 foot max, 9 pull throughs, 7 – 50 amp sites, tables, grills, water, toilets, showers, dump, trails, hike, boat.
As a back up location, Elks in town has a few spaces, or the Farmington Elks Recreation area – contact Dale Smith at 970-749-0661, about 50 miles outside of town
Head east on US-160 from Cortez, Right onto CO-140 S, Left onto NM-574/N, Left onto NE Aztec, Right onto NM-173, Left toward Rd. 4280 (1 1/2 miles on an unpaved bumpy dirt road)

CANYON DE CHELLY, AZ

Visit all 9 overlooks on south and north rims. Hike to White House Overlook and trail if open. Private tours are available through the canyon from the Navajo Tribe

Parking Location

Cottonwood Campground which is Navajo run, all first come, first First served. No Showers or hookups. $20 a night dry camping, dump and water available. Usually not busy. Navajo Nation Campground

PAGE, AZ

Activity Ideas

Kayaking may be difficult due to the low water. You can now hike out to Lone Rock. Many of the marinas are closed. Glen Canyon Dam, John Wesley Powell Museum. Tours are available for Antelope Canyon (need reservations). See Horseshoe Bend, hike the Hanging Gardens. This is also a good place to try out for the lottery to hike The Wave. It is a lottery system that can be entered on line.

Elks Lodge 2498, 806 Aqua Ave, Page, Az 86040. $20 water and electric, $10 Dry camping. Flat dirt lot to dry camp at right near a cell tower. Dump about a mile away in town. Cash or check only. Lounge is open from 3PM, Monday thru Sunday. Chicken wings or strips and Fries Tuesday nights at 5:30, Friday night Dinner, Slingo and Pot luck Thursday, Bingo Friday night.

Kaibab National Forest. Close to Highway 67 to get into the Grand Canyon National Park, plenty of spaces all along route 22.

ST. GEORGE, UT

St. George is considered the greater Zion area with so many fabulous hikes, scenery, restaurants and so much more. Hike Snow Canyon, Boat and ride ATVs at Sand HollowBike the Anasazi trail (for single-trackers), Gooseberry Mesa (for technical tricksters), or the Snow Canyon Paved loop (for the rest). Ride a horse, fish a river, canyoneering, 4 wheeling and finish up with a spa day at one of the many spas in town. Snow Canyon Park offers trails, dunes and red sandstone cliffs, Sand Hollow State Park features a large reservoir. Stately 19th Century buildings such as the Pioneer Courthouse and Brigham Young Winter dot downtown and the St. George Art Museum. This is just a partial list of all the things to do in the area.

Death Valley is a vast national park with over 3 million acres of designated wilderness and hundreds of miles of back country roads, plus some amazing scenery. Visit Artists Palette, Zabriskie Point which overlooks the badlands and salt flats, Dantes View, Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, Harmony Borax Works, Wild-rose Charcoal Kills, Ubehebe Crater and so much more. There are also lots of hikes and back country driving for all skill levels.

Parking Location

Furnace Creek Campground, First Come, $25 for hook ups with senior card. Reservations start on October 15th so you may need to look those 2 days so you won t have to move. The weather may still be hot so you may want hook ups. Alternate parking is Sunset Campground at $7 per night with senior pass. No hookups.

I-15 North to exit 76A for I-15 South towards Los Angeles, exit 33 for NV-160 w/Blue Diamond Road, Left onto Bell Vista Ave (entering California), Right onto CA-127 N, Left onto CA-190W, follow signs for Furnace Creek.
