22-23 Western Winter Circuit Part 2

LAKE HAVASU TO BRYCE CANYON 2023

January 31, 2023 to May 22, 2023

This circuit will pick up right after the Quartzite stop and travel through Arizona and into Utah, ending at Ruby’s Resort at Bryce Canyon National Park. Everyone will need to participate and help out by either hosting a stop, being a parking director when needed, write up the articles for the newsletter, be in charge of fires, (if allowed). This is a full participation club and everyone helps out.

Interested in leading this circuit, again please contact Maynard ASAP as the Circuit leader also has the option of changing the circuit around, add or take off stops. This is always a group effort and everyone participates.

LAKE HAVASU CITY, AZ

LAUGHLIN, NV

Visit Don Laughlins Classic Car Collection, visit the many casinos, travel by water taxi, stroll along River Walk or take your bike, kayak, whitewater raft on the Colorado River, visit the Laughlin Labryinths. Take route 66 to the old western town of Oatman and see the burros roam the streets. Good place to stop for lunch.

APACHE JUNCTION, AZ

Biking, 4-wheeling, lots of hiking in the Superstition Mountains, drive the Apache Trail, visit Tortilla Flats, check out Canyon Lake, Lost Dutchman Theme Park. Pan for Gold.

Elks Lodge 2349, 2455 N. Hwy 88 and Lost Dutchman Rd. 85219. All dry camping, $10 night. We will be parking close and may need a parking director. $10 dump open 3 days a week, water available. Must be an Elk, no guests. Optional location is Lost Dutchman State Park – Need Reservations. Peralta Canyon Dispersed may also be a possibility.

Artsy town to explore, hike Anza Trail to Tumacacori, Tumacacori cultural demonstrations, Nogales, kayak Pena Blanca and continue around on back road to Arivaca, birding at Madera Canyon, Whipple Observatory Visitors Center (reservations needed).

Directions and Other Information

From I-19 going South, take exit 40, go under freeway and then south on Frontage Rd to Bridge Rd. Turn left (east) onto Bridge Rd. At T turn right and go about mile to the bridge. Cross bridge and continue to a gravel road on left. Turn left onto gravel road then right over RR tracks. Continue straight onto the tree lined road, then make a right and then a left turn. The turn into the Flying W Ranch (Sunflower Campground) is on the left. Park on the large level field to the left of the house. Water, electric, dump, laundry and WIFI available for extra. Showers $5 each. Drive very slowly in park as not to raise any dust. Follow Directions for Sunflower Campground. GPS may not work correctly.

Town Park of Patagonia just before the bathrooms on the side of the Caboose as you enter town. Back in or forward and keep close together, limited room. $5 per night requested donation to the town. Circuit leader or host must Must contact the City at least 1 month prior to gain permission.

Take I-10 east to Benson. At Benson take AZ-90 27.5 miles south to Sierra Vista. Go straight at the light when AZ-90 turns to the left. You will now be on Buffalo Soldier Trail. Turn left on Wilcox Drive. The lodge is on the right. Enter on the east side of the lodge. Approximately 3 dry spots.

ROOSEVELT, AZ

Parking Location

Windy Hill Campground, Coyote Loop. There are 3 loops in Coyote closer to the water. Reservations can be made for odd numbered sites through Recreation.gov, even numbered sites are first come first serve. $25 single, $50 double, 1/2 off with senior pass on single sites. The Javelina loop is close if the others are filled.

Directions and Other Information

From Globe, AZ go west on Hwy 60 to Hwy 188. Take Hwy 188 north to Windy Hill CG. Go into campground and pay fee at machine for the number of days you are staying, currently $12.50 per day Golden Age or Senior Pass. Double sites is $50 or $25 with pass. Sites have covered tables and fire pits, the bathrooms and showers are closed. Pack it in, pack it out, trash only picked once a week. Dump located across from Cholla Campground, 8 miles north on Hwy 188, (no fee) Scenic area. Possible wildflowers and cactus blooms. No RV’s over Hwy 88 (Apache Trail).

Visit Sedona red-rock buttes, Chapel of the Holy Cross, Cathedral Rock Trail, Oak Creek Canyon, Broken Arrow Hike, Little Horse Trail, Tlaquepaque Arts and shopping Village. So much to explore there. The hiking is unlimited along with jeep trails.
In Clarkdale/Cottonwood, check out the Verde Canyon Railroad, Arizonia Copper Art Museum, Clarkdale Downtown Historic District, Tuzigoot National Monument, Chateau Tumbleweed Winery, Verde River, Woodchute Wilderness Area with hiking trails, Sedona, Montezuma s Castle National Monument and Jerome.

Parking Location

Moose Center 1449, 1051 S Broadway, Clarkdale, AZ 86324 $8 Donation for dry camping, need someone to collect the money and account for everyone. Must have a Moose card to buy food and drinks. Large property, look for WIN signs on where to park. There is water but no dump. Dump about a mile away.

Hwy 87 toward AZ-260 W/Finnie Flat Road (signs for AZ-89A/Cottonwood/Jerome). Stay on 260 W, Use the left 2 lanes to turn left onto 89a/S Main Street. Turn right onto Gerry Heights Rd. Look for WIN signs.

GRAND CANYON/TUYSAYAN, AZ

Grand Canyon National Park, in Arizona, is home to much of the immense Grand Canyon, with its layered bands of red rock revealing millions of years of geological history. Viewpoints include Mather Point, Yavapai Observation Station and architect Mary Colters Lookout Studio and her Desert View Watchtower. Lipan Point, with wide views of the canyon and Colorado River, is a popular, especially at sunrise and sunset.

KANAB, UT

Activity Ideas

Zion National Park, Bryce National Park, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Dance Hall Cave, Coral Pink Sand Dunes National Park, hiking, biking. Zion has incredible hikes. The Wave is probably the most incredible hike but you will need to enter the lottery on line 2 days prior. White Pockets is also a fabulous place to hike but your also need reservations and a permit. There are usually less people trying to get out there as it a long 4 wheel drive to get there with deep sand. You can also enter lottery to hike Angels Landing.

Parking Location

Gravel pit off of Hwy 89. Free dispersed. Note this is a new gravel pit. Host should definitely get there the day before to scout the area and post signs as to the best way to enter the area.

BRYCE, UT

Activity Ideas

Hiking, Biking, 4 wheeling. Leave your car in the public parking area across from Ruby s Inn and ride the free shuttle into the park. They stop at a number of locations about every hour or so; so you can get off and hike a trail and then get back on the shuttle and go to another location. The Rainbow bus may be running. Will need to be verified. There are too many hiking opportunities to list, as well as a 6.2 mile shared use trail, that accommodates bicycles, pedestrians, dogs, etc. There are also a number of hiking trails in the nearby and beautiful Red Canyon. Four wheeling opportunities abound in this area, as well as scenic drives. Go horseback riding. Have a Potluck/burn your own. We have our patio area for these events and meetings that belongs only to our group.

Rubys Inn Campground, Highway 63, Bryce, Utah 84764 laundry, dump, water, restroom, showers, outdoor and indoor heated pools. $10 a night dry camping per person. 300 Main Street. $120 for all 12 days. All fees must be collected by a WIN (Circuit Leader/host) and paid in advance. Any questions are to go to the circuit leader or Maynard. You may not come in early or stay late with the exception of the circuit leader and the hosts may come in a day early. There are no short stays, every person has to pay for the whole 12 days.
