2020 East Coast

2020 East Coast

This circuit will start in Fruitland Park, FL as the most southern location and will proceed north to Bangor, ME. Gatherings include Savannah, Charleston, the Outer Banks, Assateague, Washington, DC, Philadelphia, the Atlantic Boardwalk, NYC, and Acadia National Park with many others along the way. We will bike, hike, kayak and sightsee our way north. The number of participants will need to be limited due to the number of sites available at most of the stops that are Moose or Elk Lodges, suggested 10 to 12 participants. Please note that several Federal campgrounds are included, and they all now require reservations to be made through Recreation.gov. Visit Kingsley Plantation, the oldest(1790s) and best-preserved plantation site in Florida. Bike the Jacksonville-Baldwin Rail Trail and walk the Jacksonville Beach Pier. Many hiking options such as the Timucuan Preserve and Talbot Island State Park. Drive to St. Augustine to tour the Castillo De San Marco Fort (built by the Spanish in the 1600s), the lighthouse, and the Fountain of Youth.

Take either a trolley tour or free walking tour of the historical downtown area. Eat lunch at the several restaurants in the downtown area such as Mrs. Wiley’s. Spend the day on the beach at Tybee Island and climb the steps to the top of the lighthouse. Tour Fort Pulaski National Monument and Bonaventure Cemetery. Kayaking and bike trails are also available.

Charleston, SC

Start with a trip to the Visitors Center for a movie on Charleston and pickup event brochures, then continue to the City Market. Take a tour of the Tea Planation and visit the Angel Oak tree, estimated to be 500 years old and stands 66 ft tall and 28 ft in circumference. Take a self-guided walking tour of the Battery District of Old Charleston, including Saint Michael’s Church (built 1752-1761), the Old Post Office (1896) and the seawall with a view of Fort Sumter at the mouth of the bay. Board the ferry at Patriots Point for a tour around the harbor on the way to the Fort Sumter, where the first shots were fired starting the Civil War.

Murrells Inlet is a short drive from Myrtle Beach where you can take a stroll on the boardwalk and beach and have lunch at Duffy’s – where the house band for several years was Alabama. There is plenty of great shopping and activities at Broadway at the Beach, Tanger Outlets and the Malls. Visit the Huntington Beach State Park and the nearby Brookgreen Gardens, a unique combination of botanical gardens with outdoor sculptures and exhibits of wild animals. Dinner and dancing available at the American Legion. Take a boat tour or kayak the intercostal waterways or salt marsh.

Take a trolley ride through the downtown Historic District, then explore the river walk along the Cape Fear River and the Saturday Market and the vibrant shopping streets. Visit the battleship USS North Carolina, a huge floating relic of World War II. Take a tour of Bellamy Mansion, built in 1861, a most spectacular example of antebellum architecture, and Poplar Grove, one of the country’s oldest peanut plantations. A boat tour of Cape Fear River offers a view of the city. Visit Fort Fisher and the pier at Carolina Beach.

Visit New Bern where the British Governor Tryon lived in the 1770’s and where Pepsi Cola was invented in 1898. Drive to Beaufort walk and/or sail the Bogue Sound and visit the NC Maritime Museum. Tour Ft. Macon, one of many old forts along the Atlantic Ocean dating back to 1794. Explore the Cedar Point Tideland Trail in the NF and enjoy the beaches and restaurants on nearby islands.

Assateague is a 37mile long barrier island on the Atlantic Coast of Maryland and Virginia. The terrain is a mix of sand dunes, maritime forests and salt marshes. Two herds of wild horses inhabit the island. The horses are descended from late 17th century horses brought by colonists attempting to avoid livestock taxes. Activities are abundant on the island with crabbing and clamming and a long stretch of beach for swimming, kayaking and fishing. Spend a day at the beach in Seabrook or Hampton. Dine at the Smoky Quartz Distillery, a craft distillery producing bourbon and rum. Eastman Docks offers fishing charters. In Newburyport, there are whale-watching tours, Plum Island Beach with a lighthouse. Tour the Merrimack River Station of the Coast Guard, the birthplace of the Coast Guard. There is also a bike ride available on the Clipper City Trail.
